Dirt bikes give you the ability to cruise over all types of terrain and provide you with a thrill you can’t get from any other vehicle. Instead of riding your dirt bike only when you’re heading off the beaten path, there are adjustments you can make so that it can be used in your everyday life. Take a look at these four ways to make your dirt bike street legal.

How to Make Dirt Bikes Street Legal

1. Lights & Turn Signals

The DOT states that your dirt-bike-turned-motorcycle must have a headlight that can be switched from high beam to low beam. It must be turned on at all times to alert other drivers of your presence. Your taillight also must have brake lights. In addition, some states require you to install turn signals, while others allow hand signals as a viable alternative. To maximize your safety, it’s recommended to install turn signals.

dirt bike2. Tires

The tires on your dirt bike must have “DOT” on them, which means they pass DOT standards. These types of tires are also the safest to use on the roads because they have an additional layer of rubber and can handle the higher speeds of the highway. Many people who transform their dirt bikes will use 17-inch rims, then install street tires made for sport bikes.

3. License Plate

You must have a valid license plate attached to your dirt bike with plate brackets. Find out how your state requires the plate to be displayed and stop by a DMV office to make sure your bike passes the test. You may also need to purchase a light so that it’s illuminated at night.

4. Mirrors

The number of mirrors required will depend on the state. For example, some require two mirrors to be mounted on the bike, while others only need one. Regardless of how many mirrors your bike must have, purchase quality ones so that you can see what’s going on around you at all times.
