Dentists and pediatricians alike recommend making dental appointments for your kids as soon as their first tooth emerges, which may or may not spark a knee-jerk reaction from your children. Although many children are nervous about the new sights and smells present at most dental offices, you can help your little one to have a pleasant experience by doing a few things ahead of time. Here are three ways to ease your child’s fear of the dentist.

3 Tips for Soothing Kid’s Anxiety at the Dentist’s Office

1. Watch Your Language

When you talk about that upcoming dental appointment, watch your language and never use negative adjectives to describe visits. For instance, instead of telling your child they “have to” go to the dentist, explain that kids get the chance to attend regular dental appointments, and how much healthier their teeth will be because of those experiences.

2. Make Regular Checkups a Priority

dentistThe more exposure your child has to the office environment, the more accustomed they will become to the procedure, and the less they will stress about routine cleanings and exams. Bring your child along with you to the dentist when you can, and always book regular appointments for your little ones.

3. Bring Along Their Favorite Toy

If your child is nervous about dental appointments, consider bringing along their favorite toy, blanket, or TV show downloaded onto your smartphone or tablet. Be there to comfort them throughout the appointment, and talk with the dentist about their level of anxiety. With a little extra attention and some familiar items on hand, that appointment might be a lot less stressful for your child.
