Keeping your fragile items safe when moving is a tricky step. Everything from dishes and glasses to mirrors and sculptures should be packed well with the right materials so they are protected during transport. Here are five tips to keep in mind about how to pack breakables for your next relocation.

How to Pack Breakables

moving1. Proper Boxes

Avoid large boxes that will become too heavy when full, but go for thicker cardboard that will remain stable while moving. You can also purchase boxes designed to house glasses and dishes, complete with built-in dividers for secure packing.

2. Tight Arrangement

Line boxes with newspaper, tissue paper, or packing paper to pad the bottom and sides. Wrap each breakable in its own paper cushion before placing it inside the box, and stuff more packing paper or other material like packing peanuts in between items to stop them from clanking. Stuff paper inside each glass or vase, and top the box with more padding.

3. Last to Pack

Save packing your fragile belongings for the end. Since breakables will take longer to arrange and prepare, you’ll relieve some future stress knowing that everything is ready to go and you just have to worry about delicate pieces. This also ensures your fragile boxes don’t end up at the bottom of a pile.

4. Secure Tape

Make sure the bottom of the box is fastened with packing tape. Add a double layer to bear the weight of its contents. Also seal the sides or any other gaps to strengthen the box and stabilize its shape. Tape the top securely so the box remains closed throughout the move.

5. Labels

Always mark the top and the sides of each box containing breakables with “fragile” so movers will handle it with care. They will not stack anything on top of these items, which will be gently transported from place to place. You can also opt to move fragile boxes yourself. Keep labeled boxes separate so they don’t get placed on the moving truck.
