Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, occurs when plaque and tartar build up under the gumline. Tartar is the solid form of plaque, or the sticky, whitish biofilm that forms when mouth bacteria work with food sugars to form decay-causing acids. Left untreated, plaque and tartar cause gum inflammation, deterioration, and, eventually, bone loss. Prevent gum disease and its precursor, gingivitis, from happening to you with the following tips.

Top 5 Tips for Preventing Gum Disease

1. Enjoy a Healthy, Balanced Diet

Consume a diet high in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins to maintain a healthy mouth and body, including fruits and veggies that clean the teeth naturally. Celery, carrots, and apples are some of these cleaners. Limit your sugar and starch intake, as they help produce decay-causing acids at a fast rate.

2. Brush & Floss Every Day

gum diseaseClean your teeth using a soft-bristled brush for two minutes twice a day. Use a timer to ensure you brush for the recommended time, and always avoid hard-bristled brushes and aggressive brushing, since both contribute to gum recession. Floss once a day, creating C shapes around each tooth to remove food particles the brush cannot reach.

3. Drink Plenty of Water

Drink a gallon of water per day to flush food particles and sugary drinks from the mouth and enjoy better health overall. Dry mouth inhibits saliva production and leaves you more susceptible to plaque and decay.

4. Avoid Tobacco Use

Decrease your gum disease risk by abstaining from tobacco use. Cigarettes and other tobacco products impair the immune system, making it more difficult for you to fight off an infection. Smoke also irritates and damages the gums.

5. See Your Dentist Every 6 Months

Schedule teeth cleanings with a dentist every six months to give your gums the deep cleaning they need. Only a professional can remove tartar, so the longer you go without a cleaning, the greater your risk of gum disease is. They may also suggest a mouthwash to help reduce tartar formation.
