A trip down a river in a float tube or boat is a relaxing, fun way to spend the day and take in the sights and sounds of nature. Even if the water is gentle, being safe is critical for keeping every member of your trip safe during the ride, especially when the river has a strong current. Here are five tips to keep in mind when you embark on Current River float trips.

How to Protect Yourself During a Current River Float Trip

1. Life Jacket

Life jackets are mandatory for any trip on the water, even on the calmest day. While you may not be required to wear them at all times, they must be with you during the excursion. Some conditions can cause rivers to move rather quickly, and danger can hit without much notice. Life jackets keep you buoyant, especially for young riders. River boating and canoeing companies typically offer rentals to keep all patrons safe.

2. Sun Protection

Besides sunscreen to protect your skin, wear a hat and sunglasses to protect your scalp and eyes in the bright sunshine. Even on an overcast day, UV rays are still detrimental. Make sure your hats and sunglasses have ties and safety straps, so they stay on for the duration of the Current River float trip. If you must tie gear to the boat or inner tube, use a short rope, as long ropes can get caught in the riverbed.

3. Hydration

current riverAlways pack water and sports drinks to stay hydrated during the trip. Spending a lot of time outdoors, even if you are simply lounging on an inner tube, will make you thirsty. You will still perspire in the heat, so replenishing fluids is necessary. Avoid glass or foam containers for your beverages as they may break and pollute the water, and are prohibited.

4. Footwear

Appropriate footwear will protect your feet from jagged rocks and uneven ground in and around the river. There is also a chance for other broken objects that sometimes find their way into the water, such as glass. Flip flops are not advised as they are flimsy. Choose sandals designed specifically for Current River float trips or wear comfortable sneakers.

5. River Buddy

If you are new to excursions, make sure to embark with someone experienced. Start with a gentle ride, and when you gain more confidence, try more active waters. Always make sure you and any partners are good swimmers in case your tube or boat tips, or you are separated.
