Your manual transmission transfers the power produced by the engine to the wheels for movement. If it fails, your vehicle will become inoperable, potentially stranding you far from home. While these systems tend to be reliable, there are some common issues you should bring to the attention of a mechanic.

Troubleshooting Common Manual Transmission Problems

1. Humming Noises

A humming or whirring noise coming from the transmission typically indicates a problem with its lubrication. This could mean there is not enough oil, or that the fluid has been contaminated with particles large enough to grind against the gears. If ignored, insufficient lubrication will result in the transmission overheating or premature wear of its parts.

2. “Jumping” Out of Gear

manual transmissionOlder transmissions may start to jump out of gear after you shift it and let go. This could mean the transmission is worn out and needs to be completely replaced or that specific parts are damaged. Your mechanic will inspect a variety of components, including the shift linkage, shift rail springs, pilot bearings, and the shift fork assembly. If the transmission is jumping out of only high gears, it likely needs to be realigned or the clutch housing needs tightening.

3. Refusing Gear

If the transmission refuses to go into gear, the most probable cause is either the shift linkage or the clutch. The shift linkage is the group of cables that connects the gearshift to the transmission, and it may need to be adjusted, tightened, or replaced. The clutch could stop the transmission from going into gear if it isn’t fully releasing or needs adjustment.
