As homeowners, we try to protect our properties from any type of damage. However, a small and mighty colony of termites can go practically unnoticed for years, all while eating away at your home. To make sure you are prepared for any unwanted visitors, here’s what you should know about the damage termites can cause and common signs of an infestation.

The Danger of Termites Invading Your Home

How Termites Damage Your Home

termitesTermites are small insects that can bring significant damage. Often referred to as the “silent destroyers,” termites can thrive in various areas of your home without any obvious signs. They feed off of cellulose-based plant materials, like wood, insulation, and flooring, which are used in almost every home today.

Signs of Termites

While termites can cause major damage, there are signs you can look for to stop the infestation from progressing:

  • Appearance: Termites are often mistaken for ants, as they have similar waist and wing sizes. Most termites are anywhere from ¼ to ½ inch long and have soft, pale-colored bodies. Check areas of your home for discarded wings and termite droppings to confirm an infestation.
  • Season: In the warm, rainy months of March, April, and May, termites begin to fly from their current feeding grounds to mate. New colonies are produced and the infestation increases. This is when your home is at the highest risk for unwanted visitors.
  • Location: Termites are attracted to light, so look for them surrounding your windows and doors. Outdoors, they can be found gathering at the base of your foundation.
  • Damage: Noticeable signs of damage are hollowed-out wood with small traces of mud, as well as tiny holes in plaster and drywall. Termites can also go unnoticed behind walls and beneath floor coverings. Look for signs of sunken surfaces or ripples in these materials.
