Getting pulled over for signs of drunk driving is stressful, regardless if there is any alcohol in your system. Do:

Be polite.

When officers pull someone over for signs of drunk driving, they are often already biased against the motorist and are looking for anything to confirm their suspicions. If you are rude and argumentative, for example, they might interpret it as aggression and will be more inclined to arrest you should the confrontation escalate. 

Follow orders—to an extent.

Hand over your driver’s license, registration card, and insurance information when the officer requests them. Likewise, if they ask you to turn down the radio or keep your hands on the wheel, do so immediately. However, you do not have to submit to field sobriety tests, nor are you obligated to answer any questions unrelated to the traffic stop.   

Don’t:

Consent to a search.

When officers ask to search the vehicle, politely refuse. If police then claim they have probable cause to conduct one, do not resist. At this point, it is wise to start filming the stop if you have not already. The footage could help a criminal defense attorney fight any resulting charges because you initially refused the search, and officers may not have had the right to conduct one. 

Speak if an arrest follows.
