When a piece of furniture has been in the same spot for a while, your carpet will suffer from dents created by legs and frames. These imperfections can cause frustration if you want to rearrange your space or if you’ve just moved into a home and the previous residents’ layout is still on your rug. Below are a few carpet repair basics for eliminating unsightly dents.

How to Remove Carpet Dents

Cold

carpet repairOne of the simplest ways to remove dents is to place a few ice cubes in the depressed area. For small dents, four hours will do while larger dents need about 12 hours. The water from the melting ice causes the carpet fibers to swell back to their standard height. Blot the water with a clean white towel or sponge to remove the moisture.

The final step in a cold carpet repair like this is to fluff the newly revitalized fibers. You can use a coin or thin comb to arrange the carpet back to its original look. Run your hand along the top to even out the fibers and create a uniform appearance—you can also vacuum over the area once it’s dry.

Heat

When the cold carpet repair does not work, switch to heat. First, spritz the dented area with clean water until it’s saturated. Grab your hair dryer, and hold it at least six inches over the wet spot. Just like it does for your hair, the blow dryer will increase your carpet fibers’ volume. Use your hands to fluff as you go.

Another heat option is to iron it out. Dampen a clean, white towel and place over the area in question. Carefully use your iron on medium heat over the towel only, taking extra care not to touch your rug with the iron itself. Ironing the carpet directly will scorch it. You can then use your hand to complete the process or simply vacuum the entire carpet.
