Spring has finally arrived and with it comes plenty of heavy rain. If your gutters are filled with leaves and debris, rainwater can’t flow through them properly. This can cause damage to more than just your gutters. It can also affect your roof and siding, and if the water enters your home, it can cause mold and other damage. To ensure your gutters are prepared for the rainy season, follow the tips below.

Preparing Your Gutters for the Rainy Season

1. Clean Them

Cleaning your gutters is essential, especially after fall and winter are over. They may be clogged with leaves, sticks, dirt, and other debris that will prevent water from draining away from your home properly. You can clean them yourself with a ladder, thick gloves, and a trash bag or bucket. Start at the drain outlet and move away from it as you go. Then, flush the downspouts with a hose.

2. Install a Gutter Guard

Once your gutters are clean, install a gutter guard. These are essentially screens placed on top. They allow rainwater to enter and drain, but keep out leaves, sticks, and other large debris. It’s important to remember, however, that guards won’t eliminate all maintenance. You’ll need to ensure they are kept clear and should still clean the gutters periodically to remove small debris.

3. Inspect for Damage

guttersLook for cracks in the gutters and downspouts and check the hardware that secures them to the roof, siding, and other elements. Tighten any loose screws and repair or replace any sections that are cracked or otherwise damaged.
