Sheds are convenient places to store tools, home improvement equipment, and machinery. If you’re planning on purchasing a shed, you’ll have to decide whether to opt for wood or metal. Here’s a brief overview of the unique advantages and disadvantages of each material.

Wood

One reason people are attracted to wood sheds is because of the classic, rustic look. Wood sheds are also easy to customize via color and interior and exterior design elements. For example, you can install hooks and shelving to improve its storage capabilities.

shedsIt’s important to note that wood sheds are susceptible to infestations from insects like termites and carpenter ants, as well as larger animals like mice and birds. While there are a few precautions you can take to fortify wood sheds against these critters, such as trimming nearby branches and keeping untreated wood away from the structure, they will remain a more attractive space for pests than their metal counterparts.

Metal

Because of the cost of materials and the fact that many metal sheds are prefabricated, they’re typically cheaper than their wood counterparts while still offering a safe storage space. They also come with lower maintenance requirements, as they don’t have to be treated for insects.

While metal sheds may not be as vulnerable to wildlife infestation, they can incur damage in other ways. Because they’re made of weaker materials, metal sheds cannot withstand the same amount of inclement weather as wood sheds. Additionally, they’re vulnerable to rusting over time and dings and dents.
