Let’s face it; sometimes it’s hard to part with certain belongings. That’s why storage units are indispensable when it comes to keeping your home organized. Before packing your rugs and china plates away, you’ll need to take a few precautionary steps to protect them from pests and humidity damage. Keep these helpful tips in mind.

5 Packing Tips for Your Storage Unit

storage unit1. Roll Carpets & Rugs

Rugs and carpets should be rolled and stored upright in a cool, dry storage unit. Remember to roll in the direction of the pile. If the rug is frail or damaged, keep the pile facing out.

2. Use Protective Coverings

Rugs and carpets should be dry cleaned to remove any bugs, dirt, and other contaminants that can cause damage over time. Wrap rugs and carpets around an acid-free tube, and then cover them using a clean sheet made from a breathable material like cotton or muslin. Secure with fabric twill tape to keep the covering in place.

3. Stack China Plates Smartly

Stack plates of similar sizes together, and use a cushion such as paper plates, newspaper, or coffee filters between each to prevent damage from occurring. Plates can be stored in bundles of four, while bowls should be kept in groups of two or three.

4. Store Cups Rim Side-Up

When preparing china or other delicate tableware for storage, the biggest thing you’ll need to worry about is chipping or scratching. Cups and mugs should be wrapped individually using paper or fabric. Keep them stored with the rim side facing up to prevent chipping.

5. Secure Lids

Items with lids, such as teapots or containers, should be either fastened with waxed twine or wrapped with paper. If using twine, remember to place the lid upside-down within the container before wrapping. If using paper, wrap the lid separately before using a larger piece of paper to bundle it together with its container.
