With summer around the corner, it’s time to get your the AC unit ready for the hot weather. There are some details to know beforehand to protect the equipment and make sure the system keeps you cool all season. Here, the HVAC contractors at C&S Heating & Cooling in Wentzville, MO, share a few steps before turning on your air conditioner.

An HVAC Contractor’s Guide to Switching on the AC

1. Inspect the Equipment

Check for outdated or broken equipment such as an old thermostat or damaged lines. Make sure ductwork is sealed and there are no compromised areas. If any equipment is old or damaged, invest in a newer, more efficient model before the season begins.

2. Clear the Vents

The air vents should be clean so nothing is blocking air flow. Clear any accumulated dust to improve the air quality. Ensure furniture, curtains, or any other items are not blocking or covering vents.

3. Change the Filters

Check filters and change them if they are old or dirty. Filters catch dust and grime before they permeate the living space. Filters in good shape also protect your equipment and keep it working efficiently.

4. Inspect the Lines

5. Go Outside

The outdoor condenser should be free and clear of leaves, twigs, and anything else that will hinder its performance. Make sure there is no damage or missing components and that electrical panels are closed and secure.

6. Assess the Electrical

Check any electrical circuits and make sure connections are safe. If so, turn them on once you are finished cleaning the equipment. Also, inspect outdoor wiring and call in an HVAC contractor if anything looks damaged.

7. Run a Test

When your unit looks good, run a test. Set the thermostat and switch it on so you can hear the equipment starting up. Let it run for at least 15 minutes to ensure cool air is flowing. If you notice any problems or hear any unusual noises, contact your HVAC contractor for service.
