Most of the legendary V-8 engines were made when the demand for powerful motors for road use spawned the creation of muscle cars. Even years after these engines were produced, some of the greatest hot rods remain in good condition because they are easy to troubleshoot. If you’re excited to see one, there are many restored V-8 engines displayed during events like a vintage auto show. Here are some of the all-time classics you might spot.

Classic V8 Engines You Could Find at a Vintage Auto Show

1. Oldsmobile® Rocket (1949–64)

It was in 1949 when General Motors® rolled out its Oldsmobile Rocket V-8, powered by high-octane-fuel refining technology that was developed during World War II. Its 1957 J-2 Golden Rocket, with a 371-cubic-inch displacement, became the standard in hot rods.

2. Chevrolet® Small-Block (1955–2003)

This V-8 engine has a smaller displacement than Chevrolet’s big-block series but has still gained the moniker “Mighty Mouse” from stock car racers. Its trademark upside-down casting process and sheet metal rocker arms were considered unconventional in 1955. It’s a favorite in the racing circuit and remains the most affordable to build.

3. Ford® Flathead V-8 (1932–53)

It had a successful run with Ford’s passenger cars and trucks until 1953. By today’s motoring standards, however, it’s no longer formidable.

4. Chrysler® Hemi (1951–58)

Chrysler’s first overhead V-8 engine was produced in 1951 and got its name from the hemisphere shape of its combustion chambers. Drag racers eventually discovered its power when it ran on nitromethane, spawning a new kind of hardcore racing.

5. Pontiac® V-8 (1955–81)

The Pontiac V-8 is tagged as the most flexible engine. General Motors built all of its Pontiac V-8s on the same bore spacing, unlike other carmakers that used small- and big-block platforms. Aside from drag cars, it was also used in certain GMC® pickup trucks.
