Experiencing your child’s many “firsts” is fun and exciting, and their first visit to the movie theater is no exception. Your child will be delighted to get out of the house and see a movie on the big screen. To make the trip go smoothly, here are five things to keep in mind.

5 Tips for Your Child’s First Movie Theater Experience

1. The Right Age

If your child is too young to engage with a full-length movie at home, they’re probably also too young for the movie theater. Your child should be able—more or less—to sit still without being too rowdy. Age three or four is about the earliest you should consider this activity.

2. The Right Show Time

You know late nights mean cranky children, so plan accordingly when you buy tickets. Late morning or early afternoon is a good time to take your child—that way, you won’t have to worry about disturbing the evening crowd.

3. Food & Drinks

4. Movie Options

Not every movie is a good fit for your child. Not only should you choose something which is appropriately rated for young audiences, but you’ll also need to be mindful of any specific fears your child may have—such as clowns or bugs—which may make them react badly to the movie.

5. Time to Go

Sometimes, no matter how well you plan for success, your child simply isn’t ready for the experience or isn’t in a good mood that day. Pay attention to their reactions, and be willing to leave if they get too noisy or restless.

By planning ahead and tuning in to your child’s needs, you can give yourself and your child the best chance of a successful theater excursion. If you think it’s time, have a look at local showtimes and start planning your child’s first visit to the theater.
