Nobody likes considering what would happen if a flood, earthquake, major blizzard, or other natural disaster strikes, but taking a few minutes to prepare now can mean the difference between life and death in an emergency. Daniel Oliver, a registered Farmers Insurance agent in Minneapolis dedicated to helping you protect what matters most, advises every family to maintain an emergency preparedness kit. He's compiled a list of essentials you should include to help you get started:

  • Water. You'll need about a gallon per person, per day, for drinking and hygiene purposes. Your preparedness kit should include at least a three days' supply.
  • Food. You'll also need a three-day supply of non-perishable food items, like canned goods and freeze-dried fruits and vegetables.
  • Radios. Battery-powered and hand-crank models are available. You should also get a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert, along with plenty of extra batteries.
  • Light Source. Remember to get enough flashlights and spare batteries for everyone.
  • First Aid Kid.
  • Whistle. Depending on the type of emergency, this can be very useful when signaling for help.
  • Dust Masks. In some cases, the air may be contaminated after a disaster. You may also want to keep plastic sheeting and duct tape on hand to seal up your shelter.
  • Personal Hygiene Supplies. This includes moist towelettes, garbage bags, plastic ties, and other cleanliness supplies.
