The Link Between Physical Activity & Lifespan According to a Family Health Care Clinic

Research Establishes the Benefit of Exercise

A study conducted by the National Institutes of Health involving 650,000 participants uncovered some interesting findings regarding the benefit of moderate physical activity — which is defined as brisk walking or a similar activity. When compared with people who did no activity, people of an average weight lived 4.7 years longer after partaking in 150 minutes of activity per week. More physical activity also saw increased lifespans, with those participating in 450 hours of exercise a week adding 4.5 years to their lives.

Benefits Are Available to All Groups

Study participants classed as obese who exercised for at least 150 minutes per week saw their lifespans extend up to as much as 3.4 years. Overweight participants also benefited from exercise, with an increased lifespan of 3.9 years with the same amount of exercise. The study period lasted ten years, and the participants were all 40 and older.

Along with exercise and diet, the quality of your family health care team can also impact your life.
