Excavating is the process of uncovering an area or digging out a hole by removing dirt, rocks, and other materials. It is an important stage in the construction of almost any structure. Depending on the type of excavation process being used, contractors will employ specific tools and means of removal, such as demolition, to set the type of foundation needed. Below is a general guideline of what will take place.

Planning & Clearing

Before any excavating can take place, the construction site must first be examined to determine the surrounding natural habitat and artifacts won’t be destroyed. Then, land clearing must take place to remove all vegetation, brushwood, and trees. Any holes that occur in the ground as a result will then be filled with soil and compacted. Finally, plans are drawn up to determine the size and depth of the excavation site so boundaries can be clearly marked.

Developing a Foundation

excavatingOnce the type of building is determined, the excavating can begin. The excavation for small structures can typically be carried out manually using pickaxes, shovels, and crowbars; however, larger structures often require deeper digs, so mechanical equipment is used.

While shallow digs of less than five feet into hard soil typically don’t need wall support, strutting and planking the sides is necessary for deeper trenches. When the soil is loose, the contractors will likely have to add continual or intermittent support to prevent the walls from collapsing.

If the excavation goes below the water level, the site will need to be dewatered to at least two to three feet below the bottom of the excavation to avoid waterlogging. This will keep future concrete or masonry dry and prevent it from cracking. To manage this, contractors will usually add drains along the edges of the site and collect the water in sumps for future relocation.
