One of the most important things you can do to stay safe on the road is scheduling tire replacement for your vehicle. Worn or bald tires cannot grip the road correctly, and they dramatically increase your accident risk. They are also thinner and more susceptible to punctures from road debris. Learn what factors determine when you need new tires below.

How Often Should You Replace Your Tires?

Mileage & Years of Use

The general rule is to replace your tires after about 40,000 miles to enjoy a safe vehicle. This number varies according to how often you drive your car and whether you get tire rotation as recommended by your local auto repair team. If you drive your car over rough terrain every day, you will need new tires before those who drive on smooth, well-maintained roads and highways a few times a week.

new tiresTires typically last between 25,000 and 50,000 miles, or about five to six years. If yours recently passed the five-year mark, schedule an inspection to ensure their functionality and safety.

Tire Rotation & Tread Wear

How often you request tire rotation from your local auto service plays a serious role in tread wear and eventual tire replacement. Your front tires lose their tread quicker than the back ones because they sustain the majority of the wear. Scheduling tire rotation every six months or 6,000 miles promotes even wear and a safer car.

If you get your tires rotated regularly but are still unsure if new tires are necessary, check the tread. The quarter test makes it easy to determine if the tread has worn to a dangerous level; insert a quarter into the slits in the tread. If you can see the top of George’s head, you should replace the tires. You should also look for cracks in the sidewall indicating dry rot and air leaks, as they tell you the tires have reached their expiration date.
