Teaching your kids the importance of proper dental care at a young age will help them form habits that will follow them throughout life. One of the most important techniques to learn is flossing. If you’re unsure how to coach your child, the kids’ dentist at Alaska Dentistry for Kids in Anchorage is here to guide you through the key steps of flossing.

How to Teach Your Child to Floss

1. Cut the Floss & Wrap Around Fingers

Your child should cut a piece of floss about 18 inches long. You can explain this to your child as the length from their fingertip to their elbow. Show them how to wind the floss around their middle finger, and let them practice a few times, so they can become familiar with the motion.

2. Guide Between the Teeth

The floss should slide gently up and down the side of the tooth, as opposed to being pulled back and forth. Let them repeat the process for each tooth, and supervise to make sure it’s being done correctly.

3. Rinse With a Mouthwash

When your child is finished flossing, teach them to rinse with mouthwash to remove any lingering or loose debris. Make sure to purchase a kid-friendly version, as many of the regular products contain alcohol that is too strong for children.

These helpful tips will improve your child’s oral health regimen and help them maintain a radiant smile.
