Finally, signs of spring!  It won’t be long before it’s time to switch air comfort from heat to air conditioning.  There are a few HVAC maintenance tasks that should be done to prepare the AC unit for the coming cooling season.  Following these early spring tips will help ensure your system will run efficiently, safely, and as designed.

Preparing Your AC or Heat Pump for the Spring

1. Clean or Replace the Filter

When an HVAC system has been dormant for a few months or has only been used for heating purposes, it’s likely that the filter is full of dust and debris.  It may even be clogged restricting air flow!  While this might seem like a minor issue, the reality is that a dirty filter can trigger other operation issues and cause the system to run far less efficient costing you more each month.  Before turning on your air conditioner, check and clean or replace the filter.  This will allow air to flow properly through the HVAC system, reduce stress on other components, and provide cleaner air throughout your home.

2. Check the Thermostat

HVAC maintenanceMost thermostats have batteries and it’s a good idea to replace them annually. It’s surprising how many heating and cooling service calls are due to weak or dead batteries.  Thermostats normally last for years, but with age they can become unresponsive.  If the thermostat doesn’t work, apart from replacing batteries, there could be any number of issues causing the problem.  It may be time to call in an air conditioning service technician to check out your thermostat and get your air conditioner cooling your home again.

3. Enlist an Inspection

Most homeowners aren’t comfortable checking all of the components and parts of their heat pump or air conditioning unit.   Enlisting experienced help for an inspection at the beginning of spring may be a wise choice.  Even if you’re proactive with HVAC Maintenance, an inspection of the equipment by a reliable technician will give you an honest assessment and bring to your attention any issues discovered—whether it’s weakened/stressed parts, faulty wiring, or low refrigerant.  The goal of any reliable professional HVAC contractor is to make sure your cooling equipment is ready for the summer heat and help you avoid additional breakdowns.
