Whether you just left your dentist’s office or you have a teeth cleaning scheduled in the coming days, you may be wondering how long you must wait to drink certain beverages. The general recommendation is to wait at least 30 minutes to eat or drink anything following a teeth cleaning, particularly if you received a fluoride treatment. Even after 30 minutes, however, there are some you should avoid.

5 Beverages You Shouldn’t Drink After a Teeth Cleaning

1. Coffee & Tea

Although coffee and tea offer many health benefits, they can be problematic for your teeth, especially after a cleaning. Coffee and black teas can stain the teeth, reversing the whitening effects of the cleaning. If you add sugar or cream to either beverage, the sugars can break down the fluoride, making it ineffective.

2. Berry Smoothies

A berry smoothie is a healthy beverage under most circumstances, but just like coffee and tea, berries can stain your teeth. The acidity and abrasiveness of the fruit can also break down the fluoride and eat away at the tooth enamel, leaving you more vulnerable to tooth decay.

3. Fruit Juices

If you must drink these for any reason after a teeth cleaning, choose a light-colored option like white grape or apple and opt for ones with no added sugar.

4. Red Wine

Red wine may have health benefits, but after a teeth cleaning, you should wait to drink any. It can stain your teeth and erode the tooth enamel, increasing your risk of getting a cavity. To preserve the whitening effects of your cleaning, limit your red wine consumption.

5. Soda

While dark soda can stain teeth, all soda should be avoided, both right after a teeth cleaning and long-term. Dark and light sodas contain large quantities of sugar and are highly acidic. This feeds the bacteria in the mouth that cause cavities and gum disease.

While you don’t have to give up your morning coffee or afternoon tea, consider drinking them without sugar. Same goes for smoothies and fruit juices. The more sugar you eliminate, the better. If you’re struggling to give up soda, try switching to sparkling water instead. Drinking regular tap water is also excellent for the teeth, as it remineralizes them. If your water contains fluoride, you’ll get added protection from tooth decay.
