Dog grooming is an essential part of owning a pup. However, not all coats are the same. That is why it is so important to understand your dog's fur type and which hair cut is best for them. To help with this, Robinwood Kennel, located in Highland Heights, KY, has shared their knowledge on different types of coats and how they should be cut.

Long-Haired Dogs

dog groomingCanines with long hair often require more visits to the dog grooming facility to ensure their mane is kept healthy. If your pup has only a single-layer coat, they can be trimmed in a variety of ways. In the summer, some owners choose to have them shaved to keep them cool. However, a double-coated animal does not have this option. These dogs have a top layer of fur that is tough. While this may seem incredibly heavy and hot, it actually protects against bugs and the sun’s rays. It even has insulation to keep them warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Thus, double-coated, long-haired pooches should never be shaved.

Short-Haired Dogs

Short-haired dogs require less maintenance in general. However, because their strands have little length, the hair cut options are also more limited. Still, regular visits to the groomer are necessary to help ensure their skin stays healthy and dead or shedded hair is removed. Some pups have short body hair but a tail, paws, or face that is more full. If this applies to your canine, have these areas regularly trimmed to prevent matting and mud buildup.
