Anxiety about camp is pretty common. Camp is typically the first place a child stays away from parents, grandparents...etc. for a length of time.
Part of our staff training is dedicated on what to do about homesickness.
Let's face it: If you were going somewhere where you didn't know anyone, didn't know what the food or bed would be like ....etc. there would be some anxiety and lots of questions involved before you packed your bags. We shouldn't expect any less from our children. We suggest several things to prepare your child for camp. Preparation is key. We certainly encourage coming for a tour of camp, attend open house...etc. whenever possible.
Sometimes, we have campers who do not want to be there. This is typically based on fear. Each camper at Charis Hills has a primary counselor. We focus on that camper developing a relationship with their counselor as well as buddy them with an experienced camper right from the start. We also try to answer or anticipate their questions and give them answers. We also ask the camper to try camp for 1 or 2 full days. In 28 years, I can count on one hand the campers who didn't love it by Tuesday. Feel free to give us a call. Charis HIlls Camp: 940-964-2145
