Have you ever been working on something in the house when, all of a sudden, the power goes out in that room? This is usually due to a circuit breaker trip. According to licensed electricians, there are four reasons why this issue occurs, and understanding what they are will go a long way toward determining what your next steps should be.

4 Reasons the Circuit Breaker Trips

1. Circuit Overload

This is one of the most common reasons for a trip and happens when an unexpected surge of electricity goes through the circuit breaker. If it measures more than what is necessary for that particular application, the power will be immediately shut off to prevent further damage from the overload.

2. Short Circuit

This usually results in a current being created that measures over 100 times more than what should be running through the electrical wiring, and it could easily cause a fire if the circuit breaker doesn’t cut the power.

3. Ground Fault

If a live conductor touches a surface that’s considered to be conductive but not part of the circuit, you have a ground fault. Since there’s no telling where that electricity went, it’s important to have a licensed electrician take a look at the wiring after the circuit trips to figure out where certain components are exposed and need to be repaired.

4. Wrong Breaker

There are certain breakers specified for various applications. When the wrong one is connected to the system and you attempt to turn on the power, it might sense there’s more current than it can handle. This will prevent the motor from being turned on and will keep it off until the right breaker is installed. Leave the work to a licensed electrician, and they’ll ensure the right circuit breaker is in place.
