Braces require a significant investment of a patient’s time and money. To maintain your oral health during orthodontic treatment, it’s important to know how to properly care for and clean your braces and teeth. Below, the leading orthodontists at Rad Orthodontics in Potomac, MD, share some of their best tips for keeping your mouth clean for the duration of your treatment.
3 Tips for Cleaning Braces
1. Use a Special Toothbrush
Your regular toothbrush will not be enough to effectively clean your teeth once you get braces. Rad Orthodontics will give you a special toothbrush that is designed to remove debris and plaque from the areas underneath the wires and around the brackets, as well as the gaps between the teeth. You should use your regular toothbrush to brush your teeth several times a day. In addition, you should use this special brush to clean around your brackets and under your wires after every meal. Replace both types of brushes every three to four months.
2. Brush the Exterior Surface & Inside of Teeth
When cleaning the outer surfaces of your teeth, use short brushing strokes and be sure to reach all areas of the mouth. Brush below and above the brackets to remove food and plaque. Use circular motions to then brush the inside of your teeth as plaque can also collect in these areas. Don’t forget to brush your tongue and the roof of your mouth.
3. Floss With a Water Pick
Flossing under the wires may prove difficult with traditional floss, which is why it’s recommended to purchase a water pick. This device shoots out thin streams of water to remove food particles and plaque caught under the wires, in between the teeth, and along the gum line.
