Although it is a common occurrence, tooth loss takes most people by surprise and can be the result of another traumatic injury, which is why many patients wonder what to do. Fortunately, by taking the right precautions after losing a tooth, you can increase your chances of preserving your look. Here are three steps you should take if you lose a permanent tooth, and how your family dentist can help.

How to Save a Lost Tooth

1. Find & Inspect the Tooth

As soon as the injury occurs, focus on remaining calm and looking for the lost tooth. Try to limit your movements as much as possible to avoid exacerbating bleeding and stepping on the missing tooth. If you are in a room with several people, tell those around you that you have lost a tooth and that you need help locating it. After you find the tooth, inspect it carefully. If the tooth is dirty, rinse it off with clean, cold water. Also, look for additional chips or cracks, so you know whether the tooth is intact enough to replant.

2. Replant or Store the Tooth

Permanent teeth have the best chance of survival if they are replanted within five minutes of being knocked out, so try to place the lost tooth back in its original socket. If the tooth needs a little pressure to be placed back in the socket, bite down gently on clean gauze. If the tooth doesn’t move back into place correctly, store the tooth in cold milk, saline solution, water, or a Save-A-Tooth® kit during your trip to your family dentist.

3. Visit Your Dentist Immediately
