As a woman, there are numerous actions you can take to ensure you’re caring for your health. Performing a self-breast exam is one of them. While a self-breast exam is an excellent way to monitor any tissue changes in your body, gynecologists still recommend for you to visit a medical professional for a thorough assessment. If you’ve already visited your gynecologist this year, stay ahead of any potential issues by performing a self-breast exam.

In the Shower

gynecologistAnother way to perform a self-exam is while you’re in the shower. Because you often feel your breasts while washing, this is an easy way to detect any lumps or variations in your tissue. With one arm raised above your head, move the palm of your hand in a circular motion from the outside to the center while pressing gently. Make a note of any lump, swelling, or tissue thickening you notice, and discuss it with your gynecologist.

Using the Mirror

One method of conducting a breast assessment is by standing topless in front of a mirror. First, with your arms at your side, visually examine your breasts, nipples, and the tissue surrounding them. Next, raise your arms above your head and look for any changes in the tissue or appearance. While performing your exam this way, keep an eye on any swelling, dimpling of the skin, or variations in your nipples. These signs may not indicate any problems, but changes should be discussed with your gynecologist.

Lying Down

gynecologistChecking your breasts while lying down is another excellent way to discover any potential changes in your anatomy. To perform this assessment, place a pillow under one shoulder and one arm behind your head. Next, use your hand to feel the breast on the opposite side for any lumps or thick tissue. Gently squeeze your nipple and note if any discharge or pain is observed. Perform this on the opposite side.

Self-breast exams should be conducted monthly using a variety of methods to monitor the health of your breast tissue. Remember to discuss any concerns or questions you have with your gynecologist.
