Now that the cold season is finally coming to an end, there’s no reason to keep your closet crowded with heavy winter clothing. By clearing out the items you won’t be wearing for the next few months, you’ll make room for warm weather clothing you will be using. Whether you have a small apartment or just want to stay organized, consider the tips below when packing away your winter wardrobe.

Do:

Use a storage container.

apartmentAs a general rule of thumb, it’s best to store your winter clothing in a cool, dark area. Using a storage container is the most effective way to keep your clothing organized; however, you should look for one in an opaque color, as a clear container will expose your garments to direct sunlight.

Clean & fold clothing.

Before you pack away your clothes, run them through the washer and dryer. Fragrances can linger on your clothing and cause the color to change over time. You can also avoid wrinkles and stay organized by folding the garments neatly before placing them into the storage container.

Don’t:

Keep all of your clothing.

If there are articles of clothing you barely wore last season or you know you won’t wear next year, don’t take up space by putting them in storage. Seize the opportunity to donate your clothing or sell them to a consignment shop.

Forget to polish & clean your shoes.

Winter boots and shoes are exposed all season to the elements and chemical salts. Before you put them in storage, use a shoe brush or cloth to remove the grime. If they are badly stained, take them to a professional cleaner. This will maximize the life span of your winter footwear.
