Soil analyses can tell you a lot about the state of the ground you’re working on, revealing details about pH levels, texture, nutrient composition, and contamination. However, these details usually aren’t found in the dirt you walk on. Instead, you must collect a sample from deep below the surface. Providing a variety of soil and groundwater sampling services in the Greater Anchorage area, GeoTek Alaska explains a few different drilling methods used to collect samples.

3 Different Drilling Techniques for Soil Sampling

1. Macro Core

This method involves the use of a solid barrel that is pressed deep into the ground. At about five feet long, it is ideal for collecting continuous core samples of unconsolidated soil. The device is also lined to protect the sample and reduce the amount of handling, storing, and cutting needed for analysis. Liners also help ensure the results are an accurate representation of the site. While this method can collect samples of great length, macro-core testing only requires a small entry hole that will cause minimal disruption to the site.

2. Dual Tube

drillingWhen cross-contamination is a concern, dual-tube testing may be the best option. This technique involves the use of two probing rods. The first is injected into the ground to provide an outside casing that shields the soil from possible contamination. A second rod is then inserted into the outer casing to collect the sample with a secure liner. Given the stability of this method, dual-tube testing is ideal for sampling at multiple intervals or in harsh conditions. The outer casing can also be used to assist in well monitoring after the initial soil sample is retrieved.

3. RS60

The RS60 drilling probe features an outer sheath that is 3.25 inches in diameter, allowing the device to collect large samples up to 2.5 inches in diameter. If the soil is at risk of collapsing around the insertion hole, the RS60 device can be equipped with a closed piston rod to prevent outside materials from entering the liner.

When you need soil sampling in the Anchorage area, GeoTek Alaska is equipped to provide all three of these reliable drilling methods. Led by a team of experienced geophysicists, this team will not only help you conduct the testing, but also inform you as to which method is best for your needs. And, once the sample is collected, they will perform a comprehensive analysis in a fast and accurate manner.
