When you visit your optometrist at Staarmann Family Vision Center in Fairfield, OH, to pick up new glasses, you’ll need to decide what type of lenses you’d like. There are three main types of eyeglasses to choose from, and each offers its own benefits. Know the benefits and drawbacks of each type to decide which lens is best for your needs.

3 Popular Types of Glasses Lenses

1. Single Vision

Single vision lenses may come to mind when you think of traditional reading glasses. These are filled with a single prescription designed to correct to one focal point. They can correct either far-sightedness or near-sightedness.

2. Bifocal

glassesBifocal lenses have two corrections in a single lens with a distinct line between the two. Most of the lens is designed for distance vision, such as for driving or everyday living. The bottom section of the lens is used for near vision, such as when reading. These are an excellent choice for people who need a correction both for distance and near vision and don’t want to switch between two different pairs of glasses.

3. Progressives

Progressive lenses, also known as varifocal lenses, are like bifocal lenses in that they have a correction for both distance and near vision. However, there is not a distinct line between the two; there is instead a smooth transition between the distance and near vision sections. This creates a transitional third field of vision between the two in the middle of the lens, called intermediate vision. People often prefer this option if they feel the near vision section on bifocal lenses isn’t big enough.
