An HVAC system is not a small investment, and one that many people purchase only a few times. Families and businesses rely on their air comfort system to keep them comfortable through Ohio’s bitter cold and sultry humidity. When you’ve had a quality new system installed by Kent-based Wright Heating & Cooling, their technicians recommend keeping up with some simple maintenance. These easy strategies will maximize your investment by extending the life of your heating and cooling system.

Importance HVAC Maintenance Steps for a Longer Life Span

1. Regular Maintenance

Maintenance twice a year are vital, and they tend to be done in the spring and in the fall. During a tuneup, a technician will clean the unit, removing all debris and buildup that’s clogged the system in the past six months. They will change out the filters and inspect every vital component, replacing any worn or broken parts. Tuneups will keep the unit humming along efficiently and prevent major problems.   You wouldn’t run your can without a regular oil change, so why run your furnace, which runs 24/7, without a little attention!

2. Filter Changes

HVACA technician will also change the air filter twice a year. If you use the system regularly, you should also do this in between service appointments. Ask them to show you how to do it; then, you can handle this simple job every 30 to 60 days, or whatever works for your home. A clogged filter requires your system, particularly your motor, to work harder to do its job, which skyrockets your energy usage.  Overheating, also caused by a dirty filter, wears down parts more quickly.   A dirty filter is also a common cause of many “no cooling” breakdowns.

3. Use your programmable thermostat!

Any machine that runs constantly will wear down more quickly than one that gets a break. Giving your residential or commercial HVAC system a rest will extend its life while dramatically reducing your energy usage. Turn the thermostat down when you know you won’t be in the space, such as on the weekends for an office system or if you’re leaving on vacation for a home system. For businesses, program your thermostat to setback temperatures for evenings and weekends, while the facility isn’t open. On the other hand, busy families can setback their systems during the day when nobody is home.  In any case, we recommend no more than an 8-10 degree temperature difference.  Not only will you give your system a break, but your wallet, as well, with the energy savings!
