Dentures may look and feel like real teeth, but they require special care to ensure they last. By cleaning them daily and following the advice of a dentist, false teeth can last for up to eight years. Here is what you need to know about getting the most out of your replacement pearly whites.

Brush Daily

Dentures need to be cleaned daily, but you should never do so with traditional toothpaste, which is too abrasive. Instead, look for a paste that is specifically designed for false teeth, or ask your dentist for a recommendation. You should also use a special denture brush, which is typically larger than the standard toothbrush and has softer bristles. Gently brush all surfaces every day, and rinse with temperate water after every meal to prevent the accumulation of food particles, plaque, and bacteria. Don’t forget to clean your mouth, too, before putting the dentures back in.

Keep Them Moist

denturesDentures need to be kept moist, so have a glass of water or soaking solution ready when you take them out for more than a few minutes. Always check the temperature, as hot water can cause them to warp. A dentist can provide more specific instructions on caring for your particular dentures. For example, if your appliance has metal attachments, you may need to steer clear of cleaning solutions because they can tarnish the fixtures.

Handle With Care

In general, the most effective way to ensure dentures will last is to handle them with care. For example, always clean them over a soft towel on the countertop or sink so they won’t have far to fall if you drop them. Likewise, follow all your dentist’s instructions for cleaning and storing them, and be gentle when brushing them, especially around any delicate clasps.
