Pulsar Portable Generator

Clifton Feed is offering an engine-driven, revolving field, alternating current (AC) portable generator at a show special price……..$399.00.  We only have a couple left at this price.  It is designed to supply electrical power to operate tools, appliances, camping equipment, lighting, or serve as a back up power source during power outages.

Herbicide Use on Forage

Our February 1st BBA meeting focused on forage options and the use of herbicides.  As grass begins growing this spring, so will weeds.  Remember, April and May are prime months to apply herbicide to control weeds.  On native pasture, one pound of weeds controlled equals one pound of grass grown.  Improved pastures…...the ratio is 1 to 7.  That’s 7 times more grass grown!

First-Calf Heifer Management

Taking care of heifers that have their first calf is sometimes a challenge.  Most beef producers breed heifers to calve as a two-year-old so that they get into production as soon as possible.  This is fairly common in the beef industry.  These heifers should be managed differently than the mature cow herd.  A good program starts when a producer selects a low birth weight bull and then turns him with the heifers about a month before the regular cow breeding season.  Growing heifers should be kept separate from the main herd to also manage their nutritional needs differently.  They will need more energy than mature cows because they are still growing.

Rebreeding 1st-Calf Heifers

Rebreeding can be a challenge because:

  •  They are losing their baby teeth….hard to eat!
  • They are still growing…..cattle grow until age 3.
  • They are nursing…..50% more energy needs.
  • They are recovering from having that 1st calf.

Recommended Nutrition Program

High-quality forage such as oats, wheat or ryegrass will do a good job supporting 1st calf heifers if available.

Hi Mag mineral should be provided in this situation.

Purina Cattle Limiter products work great with other forage sources.  They will keep heifers in good condition to rebreed on time.  Drop by the store and we can help you set up your program.
