Awnings are lovely decorative components that also shield you from the sun and other elements, making it easy to entertain and enjoy your outside area. Just like anything else, they need to be cleaned and maintained to ensure they last a long time. Here are five simple tips for keeping yours in good shape.

Best Ways to Clean Your Awning

1. Regular Surface Cleaning

Brush off debris, twigs, cobwebs, and other dirt with a soft bristle brush at least once a week. This regular dusting stops grime from setting in and staining, making it easier to keep the awning in good shape. You can also give it a quick rinse with a garden hose to get into crevices and between the support bars to remove particles that aren’t easy to brush away.

2. Deeper Cleaning

awningsTwice a year, give your canopy a deeper cleansing with a soft brush and mild dish soap mixed in a five-gallon bucket of clean water. After brushing away debris, cobwebs, and surface dirt, wet the awning with a hose. Then, apply the soapy solution to the brush and sweep it across the surface. Rinse off the suds with your hose, and let it air dry completely. If you prefer a power washer, use a low setting that will not damage the fabric.

3. Inclement Weather

After a rainstorm, make sure your awning has enough space to dry completely. Remove any puddles from the surface, and, for retractable styles, make sure it is fully extended. Folds will collect water that can lead to mold, mildew, and bugs. If you notice fungus after a lot of precipitation, deep clean the awning and let the mild soap soak on any stains for a few minutes before rinsing. Repeat the process as often as necessary.

4. Washing Machine

Certain awnings can be removed and run through a washing machine. If you choose this route, purchase a heavy-duty detergent suited for vinyl or fabric materials. These cleaners are gentle but will eliminate the toughest stains. Check the manufacturer’s instructions so you know which cycle to use.

5. UV Protection

After cleaning it thoroughly, add UV protection to prolong your awning’s life span and reduce fading from the sun. These sealers also help defend against tough stains and make washing easier. Along with UV protection, consider waterproofing it so moisture will not linger or damage your canopy.
