Many boat owners will eventually be faced with the task of boat storage. Taking the proper precautions with this task is important to protect your vessel from damage and prolong its lifespan. Below, American Self Storage has shared some helpful storage tips for boat owners.

Remember These 5 Boat Storage Tips

1. Take Your Boat out One Last Time

It’s time for one last joyride. If you’ll be storing your boat for an extended length of time, take it out onto the water beforehand. Issues can grow worse when a boat sits dormant, so take note of anything that needs to be fixed before it goes into storage. A rough idle, leaking cabin, or an engine that sputters or makes odd noises should all be checked out.

2. Test the Trailer

If you are storing the trailer as well, now is a good time to make sure it’s in working order. Take the winch completely out to check for corrosion. Make sure the bumper’s wood isn’t rotting, and that the carpet is not coming up or thinning.

3. Give It a Tuneup

There are a few maintenance tasks that should be done before boat storage:

  • Oil Change: Replace the filter, flush out the old oil, and pour in a high-quality oil made for your engine.
  • Change Antifreeze: Your craft’s coolant system prevents your engine’s components from freezing or corroding. Drain any old coolant from your system, flush what’s left with water, and add new antifreeze.
  • Prep Other Components: Grease all bearings and spray any unprotected metal parts with an anti-corrosion spray.

4. Clean Your Boat

5. Make Sure It’s Dry

If you don’t drain water from a boat properly, you could be faced with freeze damage, mildew growth, and other major issues when your boat emerges from storage again. Raise the bow and make sure all water drains away from the craft. Consider placing mildew control bags inside of the cabin, compartments, and any other spots that might become humid.
