There’s so much to be said about the look and feel of a classic, vintage vehicle; even a casual fan can appreciate the elegance of a 1961 Jaguar, the power of a 1969 Mustang, or the elegant design of a model like the 1966 Lamborghini Miura. Still, collector cars like this are not easy to find and are a big commitment on the part of the purchaser. It’s a process that shouldn’t be taken lightly, which is why the folks at  Charlotte AutoFair Produced by Hornets Nest Region, AACA (Antique Automobile Club of America) emphasize that there are a few steps you need to take when making such a decision.

So what should you keep in mind when you’re looking at purchasing antique cars? Let’s take a look:

  • Research: Don’t rely on the seller to tell you about the vehicle; you should already be well informed about the specs of the car that you’re interested in before you step foot in a car trade show, dealership or private seller’s garage. Luckily, nowadays there’s a great wealth of information available online.
  • VIN Numbers: These are numbers used by auto manufacturers to identify the origin of vehicles and parts. When assessing a potential vehicle, make sure these numbers match up as this will indicate that the parts are original for the vehicle and that the car hasn't been stolen or heavily modified in its past.
  • Rust: Because it is essentially impossible to eradicate rust or fix the corrosion that it causes, you should avoid any vehicle that has signs of it. Basically, the problem will only continue to get worse; it’ll eat away not only the vehicle itself but its potential resale value.

Of course, one way to check out a great deal of lovely vintage vehicles is to check out the biannual Charlotte AutoFair, organized by the Hornets Nest Region, AACA. Collectors or those interested in selling their antique autos can rent lots and present their wares to the over 10,000 enthusiasts who attend this vintage auto show.
