If you wear scrubs for work, you know that they take a beating from constant wash and wear. With possible stains marking the clothing, you might not know how to properly care for your custom embroidery. However, while your scrubs are high quality and made to last, there are a few guidelines to follow to get the most out of your work uniforms.

How to Properly Care for Your Custom-Embroidered Scrubs

1. Presoak

This will help the colorfastness in both the garment fabric and the embroidery thread. Vinegar is also a disinfectant and helps mitigate odors—perfect for work uniforms in hospitals or care centers.

2. Turn Inside Out to Wash

To protect your scrubs with custom embroidery from abrasion and wear, turn them inside out before placing in the wash. Also, try to avoid washing with items that have any metal—such as rivets, zippers, or buttons.

3. Follow Basic Washing Guidelines

Separate colors and wash scrubs with dark fabric or custom embroidery in cold water. Do not use bleach or hot water unless you are laundering white work uniforms. If you are worried about germs, presoaking and adding another tablespoon of white vinegar to the water will help. If in doubt, follow the care labels on your garments. It’s usually best to use a mild cycle with cool water and a gentle detergent.

4. Air-Dry

Dryers are convenient, but they can deteriorate clothes and fade colors. Use a low setting and remove promptly if you have to use a dryer. If you live in a sunny or windy climate, drying outside will prolong the use of your scrubs, give a fresh smell, and eliminate the need to iron. Turn embroidered clothing inside out to decrease fading. You can also dry your scrubs on an indoor drying rack or large flat surface.

It’s important for your work uniforms to last and look great, especially if they have custom embroidery. Quality scrubs, like the ones available at Stellar Designs in Anchorage, AK, will not shrink or discolor after the first wash or two.
