Whether breast cancer runs in your family or not, having annual mammograms and routine breast checks are important because early detection can save lives. But, what age should women start getting breast cancer checks at a women’s health clinic or through their OB-GYN? It depends on a few factors. PrimaryPlus has been providing comprehensive care for the region for more than 35 years. Here, they explain how to know when to begin breast cancer screenings.

Teenage Years & Beyond

Whenever a woman hits puberty, her primary care doctor will likely do an informal breast exam during routine medical checks. Once she begins to see an OB-GYN, a breast check can also be completed at the same appointment where a pap smear is done. While these types of checks aren’t as thorough as a mammogram would be, regular breast cancer screenings and self-exams are recommended to feel for any lumps or abnormalities. Any cause for concern can be brought to your doctor to take a more in-depth look.

Women 40+ Years

Twomen's health cliniche American Cancer Society recommends that women ages 40 to 44 should start their annual mammograms. If you have a family history of breast cancer, you may want to start your checks a little earlier than those who have no history. Women who are 45 to 54 are encouraged to get mammograms every year, while those 55 and older can have them every two years instead. Depending on your overall health and wellness, you may need checks more frequently.
