Spring has officially arrived, and it's time to get ready for sunny skies, warmer temperatures, and the occasional thunderstorm. Over the winter months, shingle roofing can withstand the brunt of Mother Nature's whims. Since it's spring, you want to ensure your roof is ready for the months ahead—there are a few tips to guarantee your shingle roofing is in top shape.

3 Ways to Ensure Your Shingle Roofing Is Ready for Spring

1. Inspect Shingles

Upon Spring’s arrival, it's not uncommon for wet, slippery, and other dangerous conditions to present themselves, so don't climb up onto your roof to perform an inspection. Instead, stay on the ground, and use binoculars to scan the area. Look for broken, buckled, warped, or missing shingles, paying close attention to roof edges, chimneys, and skylights.

2. Check for Leaks

Leaks can wreak havoc on your home and health, so check your home carefully for any water making its way inside. Look for damage to the exterior and interior walls, as well as the ceilings. During daytime hours, check your attic, being especially mindful of any areas where sunlight is seeping in; this could indicate holes or separations you need to address. Dripping water, water stains, mildew, and mold are all things to watch out for as well.

3. Clean Out Your Gutters

Most homes with shingle roofing depend on gutters to effectively carry water away from the structure, but gutters need to be clean and free of debris to work their best. Spring is the ideal time to perform a thorough gutter cleaning. You can remove debris yourself or hire a professional to tackle the job for you—either way, you want to make sure your gutters are ready for those April showers.
