Nothing adds elegance to a kitchen like granite countertops. Though granite is incredibly durable and offers lower maintenance than many traditional materials, it’s not indestructible. In fact, it still requires regular care to provide you with years of use. The most important task is cleaning the surface properly. However, the material must be cleaned the right way to avoid damage; here are the do’s and don’ts of maintaining granite countertops.

Do:

Use a gentle touch.

Though granite is hard, you shouldn’t have to scrub until your arms are exhausted just to remove a stain. Instead, use a soft cloth or sponge and gently rub away the debris. This will reduce the risk of scratching the polish and preserve the integrity of the granite for years to come.

Clean often.

granite countertopsSpot cleaning is the easiest way to keep your countertops in top condition. The moment you notice a spill or see food collecting on the surface, wipe it up with a damp rag. If the spill has dried, use soapy water to power through the residue.

Protect the surface.

Sealed granite is as stain-resistant as possible. If the surface polish is fading or the stone is staining more easily, have the countertops resealed. Ordinarily, this should only need to be done every two or three years, but each kitchen is different and those that see more use may need granite resealing more frequently.

Don’t:

Prepare food directly on the countertop.

Using knives and placing hot pans directly on your granite countertops can damage the stone. Instead, use trivets to shield the stone from heat, and keep a few cutting boards in your kitchen cabinets so you can prepare food without scratching the granite.

Use abrasive cleaners.

Abrasive cleaners and scrub brushes can scratch the granite, leaving it open to stains, bacteria, and further damage. If you have tough stains or want to deep clean the surface, use a granite-specific cleaning agent. This will get rid of most buildup without damaging the polish or sealant.
