The experienced team of landscapers from T & L Tree and Landscape in Macedon, New York know that not just any wood makes good firewood. They’ve been in the business for over 50 years, and they believe in providing superior customer service and educating their customers.

While some companies will happily sell any old scrap wood as kindling and firewood, T & L Tree and Landscape prefers to maintain high standards. They receive calls from customers every year asking for firewood recommendations. T & L Tree and Landscape created this guide to help their customers make informed decisions regarding firewood.

It doesn’t matter if you’re purchasing cords of wood or sourcing it yourself, this Firewood 101 Q & A is sure to answer all of your questions:

  • Why are some woods better to burn than others? Different types of wood have different densities. Dense woods have a high energy content and produce long-lasting fires, while softer woods burn very quickly, and thus aren’t great options for firewood.
  • What are the best types of firewood and why? Dense hard woods like Rock Elm, Hickory, Oak, Sugar Maple, and Beech are all suitable for firewood. If you’re not sure whether a certain type of wood is good for burning, look up its relative density. If it’s relatively dense, you’re good to go.
  • What are the worst types of firewood and why? Soft woods are less desirable for firewood, but beyond that you should never use wood that is even slightly damp. Firewood must be totally dry (or seasoned) to burn effectively.
  • Is there anything else I should know about firewood? Saving scrap wood for kindling is fine but only if it is pure. Never burn wood that has come into contact with chemicals or that has been treated, painted, or stained. The smoke from treated woods can be toxic.
