Winter in Rochester, NY, is drawing to a close, and customers at McMillan Marine are getting ready to take their boats out for another fun season. But even if you properly stored your vessel, there may be problems you need to address before you go on the water. To ensure everything is in top shape, these local boat dealers recommend the following tips.

3 Ways to Prepare Your Boat for Warm Weather

1. Inspect & Maintain the Hull

Do a visual inspection of your boat, starting with the hull. Check it over for scratches, cracks, loose screws, and mildew beneath the cover. Wash down and wax your hull. This is also a good time to repaint your boat if it needs a fresh coat.

2. Update Safety & First Aid Equipment

boatSome first aid kits have expiration dates or contain items that you should replace periodically. Before going out on the water, make sure all first aid and safety items are up-to-date and compliant with local regulations. Stock up with flares, emergency food, flashlights, and fire extinguishers. Verify you have enough life jackets and flotation devices for every passenger.

3. Check the Electrical System

Inspect all electronics in the vessel and check that batteries are properly charged. Clean and lubricate any dirty battery terminals. Confirm that all light fixtures work and replace any burned out bulbs; you’ll also need a supply of spares. Go through the boat’s wiring and make a note of anything worn or in need of repair.

If it’s time to update your vessel for the spring and summer, stop by McMillan Marine for a look through their inventory.
