Just like with any equipment, regular maintenance is critical for keeping electric motors in working order. When components aren’t serviced well, you risk not being able to use the power tools and machinery powered by them, which will then lead to decreased productivity. Here are five tips for proper upkeep.

How to Maintain Electric Motors

1. Keep Track

Always keep a maintenance log so you know when the last inspection was performed, by whom, and what parts, if any, were fixed or replaced. Not only does this help you stay on schedule, but it will also help keep track of your equipment’s history and the age of components.

2. Watch Physical Appearance

Any visible corrosion or grime lets you know the motor needs service. When dirt accumulates and parts show wear and rust, the risk of these issues causing internal problems and damaging your motor increases. Make sure to wipe down any dust and dirt buildup, and store your electric motor in an area without excess grime, toxins, or moisture.

3. Notice Noises

Sometimes the cause is grime buildup, but other times there isn’t enough grease, which will cause overheating from grinding parts. If too much damage is present, you may need to replace bearings and make sure in the future proper lubrication is used.

4. Inspect Key Components

Certain parts of the motor must be inspected to keep it functioning well. Without these pieces, the equipment cannot do its job. Brushes and commutators are two important areas to check regularly. If the brush shows any wear, replace it immediately. The commutator, or switch that periodically changes the direction of the rotor and external circuit, also must not have any dents or imperfections. Scratches and grooves may indicate the brush is sparking and leaving marks.

5. Monitor Motor Windings

If you notice scorch marks, odors, or any cracks in the motor windings, test the system for failing functions. When you take apart the motor for closer inspection, you may see internal damage from overheating. Be sure to rewind the motor and check wind insulation for any other anomalies.
