A Guide to Ocular Migraines, Sycamore, Ohio

An ocular migraine is characterized by brief bouts of blindness and strange visual symptoms, like a flashing sensation in one eye. Distinct from the stereotypical migraine headache, this uncomfortable condition requires prompt diagnosis and treatment from an eye doctor. Read on to learn more.

What Are Ocular Migraines?

The term “ocular migraine” is usually used interchangeably to refer to two conditions: an aura and a retinal migraine. With the former, you may notice zigzagging patterns, flashes of light, or blind spots in both eyes. This may be accompanied by a headache. Although irritating and uncomfortable, an aura is not considered threatening.

These symptoms may precede or accompany a headache. In this case, the cause is not headache-related but generally linked to a more dire condition, such as an eye stroke. It should be promptly attended to by an eye doctor.

Treatment of Ocular Migraines

Aura treatment usually goes hand in hand with general migraine care. Your eye doctor will likely recommend resting, avoiding bright lights, and taking pain relievers or anti-nausea medications. If you have frequent and long-lasting attacks, preventative medications like beta blocker can help.

The treatment of a retinal migraine will depend on the underlying cause. For infrequent attacks, medications like NSAIDs and anti-nausea pills can help the symptoms. Lifestyle changes, like quitting smoking, are also recommended.
