An invisible fence ensures your pup remains safely in the yard without you having to install any structures or be there to supervise them constantly. Better still, it’s simple to train them to get used to the new addition. The following are three simple steps you can take to help your dog get acclimated to an invisible fence.

3 Dog Training Tips for Invisible Fence Owners

1. Get Them Used to the Boundaries

To get your pet used to being out in the yard and wearing the electronic receiver collar, you’ll first need to train them to remain within the boundaries of the fence. Mark these with flags, then attach both a non-metallic collar and the receiver collar to your pet. As the latter isn’t mean to be used with a leash, having an extra one to latch onto will make them more comfortable. The receiver collar has a beeping mode that doesn’t deliver a static correction; set it to this mode and walk them through the yard. The collar will beep the closer they get to the boundary line.

2. Introduce Static Correction

While many pet owners worry this will shock their animal, rest assured it is merely slightly uncomfortable. Start with the lowest possible setting on the collar, and increase it only if necessary. It will beep as they approach the boundary of the invisible fence. Then, they’ll receive a small static buzz if they don’t heed the warning.

3. Add Some Distractions

Using their favorite toy or treats, try to coax your pup past the fence line. Each time they stay in the yard, reward them. Positive reinforcement will have a bigger impact on their behavior than punishment. When you feel confident they won’t exit the yard, try leaving them for a few minutes at a time, all while supervising them from the house.
