You may need to store a mattress if you’re downsizing, moving, or repurposing an extra bedroom. The size of your mattress and storage unit may vary, but there are a few things you need to keep in mind to keep it safe while it is locked away.

Storing a Mattress

Keep It Together

If you’re planning to stow a box spring, bed frame, and headboard with your mattress, take them apart before storing them. Place all screws and hardware in a bag and tape it to one of the pieces of furniture so you’ll have everything together when you’re ready to get it out of storage.

Clean It First

To keep your mattress from getting mold or fungus, clean it thoroughly before stowing it. You can sprinkle it with baking soda, let it sit, then vacuum it, or you can use an upholstery cleaner. If you use soap, be sure to vacuum before its application.storage unit

Wrap It Up

After cleaning, make sure your mattress is dry, then wrap it in a plastic bag made for mattresses. You can find these at moving supply stores or online retailers. While it’s always best to use a climate-controlled storage unit, if one’s not available, using this type of bag will help keep any bugs or moisture out.

Lay It Flat, If Possible

It may not be the ideal storage situation, but it is best to lay your mattress flat. Storing it on its side can damage the springs and coils. It’s also not recommended that you keep anything on top of your mattress, as this can leave permanent dents and impressions.
