If you rely on electricity for your day to day activities, you’ll notice when the power goes out immediately. Power outages are common across the U.S., either due to problems with the electrical supply or issues with the wiring in your home, which can be fixed by an electrician. Depending on how long they last, outages can become a major problem, so it’s important to have a plan in place.

Planning for a Power Outage

1. Have Alternative Lighting

During power outages, you’ll lose electric lighting, making every task harder after nightfall. Keep flashlights and candles nearby, so you can see your way around. It’s best to have them somewhere easily accessible—like a kitchen drawer or bedside cabinet—so that if the power goes out suddenly, you can find them without trouble.

2. Keep Fuel Tanks Full

When the power is out, you’ll need to travel farther for supplies. Keep your car’s fuel tank at least half full at all times, and store extra gas for emergencies. Make sure any gas canisters are carefully sealed and stored in a safe, dry, and cool location for safety.

3. Install a Generator

ElectricianIf you have a gas generator installed in your home, you’ll have reliable power even if your electricity goes out. This is vital if you or a family member rely on electronic medical equipment. Make sure the generator is installed in an accessible and well-ventilated location to prevent the fumes and exhaust from filling your home.

4. Add CO Alarms

If you have a generator in your home, purchase carbon monoxide detectors as well. Battery-powered units will warn you of problems with your generator and protect your family even while the power is off. Test your detector’s batteries regularly to make sure the device is working.

5. Have a Plan for Your Food

Electricity is all that keeps your refrigerator and freezer running, so when it goes out, your food will spoil. During an outage, open the refrigerator or freezer as little as possible to keep the cold air inside—and in case the outage lasts, have coolers and ice to store your perishables a little longer.
