Having a storage unit is helpful when you need extra space for your items or when you want to store seasonal or business belongings offsite. As convenient and affordable as personal storage can be, there are a few things that aren’t allowed inside of these containers. Here are five to keep out of a storage facility.

Items You Cannot Keep in a Storage Unit

1. Rare or Valuable Treasures

While storage facilities are generally safe and have security features to guard your belongings, keep any valuables and sentimental items out of the units. You don’t want to risk irreplaceable keepsakes getting lost, stolen, or damaged. Since you share space with other tenants, if someone isn’t following the rules or there is a problem onsite, your valuables may be compromised.

2. Perishables

Food items, drinks, and pet food, both fresh and dry, are not allowed in storage facilities. Over time, perishables such as these will degrade and rot, which leads to strong odors, critter infestations, mold, and bacteria growth. Insects and rodents are always in search of sustenance, and leaving food and beverages in personal storage invites them in. Aside from the damage they can do to your belongings, you also put the rest of the storage facility at risk.

3. Living Things

You should never keep animals in a storage container, as this practice is both inhumane and illegal. If you need to leave your pet somewhere while you’re away, consider pet boarding instead. The living thing rule also extends to plants, which need light and water to survive. Organic material breaks down over time, and decay leads to strong smells and bacteria, as well as bugs.

Corrosive, combustible, or flammable materials are prohibited in a personal storage area. These dangerous items can cause damage and health issues if they explode or spill. Gas containers such as propane tanks, cleaning chemicals, aerosol cans, pesticides, firearms, and alcohol are all on this extensive list.

5. Illegal Items

If you don’t legally own something, you can’t keep it in a storage unit. Besides being on the hook for stolen items, you also don’t have permission to tuck these items away in the space. This also includes drugs and other substances that are against the law to own or use.
