As the seasons change and the weather grows warmer, it’s time to shut down your furnace for the year. But after a period of relying on your heating system for comfort, your unit has likely seen significant wear and tear. It’s important to clean and service it before you close it down for the year, so it’ll be ready to use when next winter rolls around.

Clean the System & Change the Filter

You can hire a local maintenance company to clean your furnace. They’ll vacuum out the burner and blower cavities and dust off the blower blades, as well as the pilot area and the flame sensor. You’ll likely need to give the system another once-over in the fall but cleaning it now will prevent this season’s dust and grime from sticking.

A clogged furnace filter blocks air flow and puts unnecessary strain on your blower, affecting air quality. Check it by holding it up to the light. If you can’t see the light through it, it needs to be changed. Choose a high-quality option from your local hardware store, or if the filter is reusable, wash and dry it thoroughly before slotting it back into place.

Get an Inspection

FurnacesOver time, your furnace may develop cracks in the heat exchanger, or leaks in the fuel lines, so it’s important to have it checked thoroughly by a professional before you stop using it for the season. While they’re there, have your HVAC technician look over all the working parts of your furnace so that they can catch problems early. Scheduling an

inspection and maintenance visit each spring will keep your system in the best shape.  If you have A/C, once the outdoor temperature is above 55 degrees, you’ll be able to have it checked out as well.
